Rotary kiln is an important equipment for nonferrous metal smelting. For example, in the smelting of copper concentrate, a rotary kiln is used for roasting to remove impurities such as sulfur and arsenic in the concentrate, and to produce roasted sand for subsequent smelting processes; when processing laterite nickel ore, the rotary kiln can dry and pre-reduce the ore to create conditions for subsequent nickel iron production; lead and zinc concentrate is oxidatively roasted in a rotary kiln to convert the sulfide therein into oxides, and then further extract lead and zinc.

The rotary kiln is an inclined rotating cylinder. Nonferrous metal raw materials are fed in from the high end and slowly move to the low end as the cylinder rotates. During the movement, the raw materials are fully exposed to the high-temperature airflow in the kiln, and physical and chemical changes occur. The heat is provided by fuel combustion to maintain the high-temperature environment in the kiln, meet the reaction conditions required for nonferrous metal smelting, and realize the processes of ore decomposition, roasting, reduction, etc.
