Calcined petroleum coke (CPC) is a high-purity carbon material obtained by high-temperature treatment of green petroleum coke (GPC) to remove volatile components and moisture. It is widely used in the aluminum industry, steel industry, titanium industry and other fields as anode, carbon additive and electrode material. The rotary kiln is one of the most commonly used calcining equipment in the world. Its advantages are high degree of automation, large production capacity and suitability for large-scale production.
Production process of calcined petroleum coke
1. Raw material preparation
Green petroleum coke is a by-product produced during the crude oil refining process, mainly from the delayed coker unit. Depending on the source, the sulfur content, metal content and volatile content of green petroleum coke vary. Green petroleum coke needs to be screened, crushed and dried to ensure that its particle size distribution and moisture content meet the calcination requirements.
2. Calcination process
Calcination is usually carried out between 1200°C and 1400°C, depending on the quality of the green petroleum coke and the specifications of the final product. The calcination time is about 45 to 60 minutes.
At high temperatures, the volatile components in green petroleum coke (such as hydrogen, sulfur, hydrocarbons, etc.) are evaporated and burned to form high-temperature gases. These gases not only provide heat, but also help remove impurities and make the petroleum coke structure denser.
3. Cooling and storage
After the calcined petroleum coke is discharged from the kiln, it is usually cooled to below 200°C by water spraying or air cooling to prevent cracking caused by thermal stress.
The dust and gas generated during the calcination process need to be dedusted and desulfurized to reduce the impact on the environment. Some factories are also equipped with waste heat recovery systems to use high-temperature flue gas for power generation or heating.
Application areas of calcined petroleum coke
Aluminum industry: used to make prebaked anodes, which are key materials for electrolytic aluminum production;
Steel industry: used as a carbon additive to improve the strength and hardness of steel;
Titanium industry: used to produce titanium dioxide (TiO₂);
Other industries: such as friction materials, carbon electrodes, foundry industry, etc.
